Working to bring the community together
About the Branch
The Greensburg-Jeannette Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was chartered in 1955 and has served Central Westmoreland County ever since. Neighboring communities are served by their own branches — the Mon Valley area by Monessen, and Allegheny-Kiski by New Kensington.
Every hour of this branch's work is volunteered. There is no paid staff. The programs, the advocacy, the forums and the youth work are carried out by members who live here.
What We Do
Community Partnership
The Greensburg-Jeannette Branch NAACP works to be a resource to everyone in our community. While our membership is primarily African American, we partner closely with organizations across every segment of the community — collaborating with local groups on the issues that matter most here.
Advocacy and Accountability
We investigate complaints of racial discrimination and injustice, and work with the law enforcement community to build stronger, more trusting relationships with minority residents. We also encourage local businesses to expand minority hiring in support of the NAACP mission.
Civic Engagement
An informed community is a powerful one. We sponsor political debates, legislative reviews, and voter education forums so residents can participate fully in the decisions that shape their neighborhoods.
Education and Culture
We sponsor youth programs and adult leadership and education activities, and host events that celebrate African American culture while promoting cross-cultural understanding and communication.
Our Mission
To ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of rights of all persons, and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination.
